How do I set up email on my iPhone?
Although
at this time Apple have not released a fully compatable email application for the iPhone
you can still set
the device to send and receive mail from most major service providers, and the Design Services hosted exchange
email
system.
Included in the mail application on the iPhone is support for Exchange, AOL mail, Yahoo Mail and gMail
If you are a Design Services website or eMail customer, you can configure your iPhone to send and receive mail on our system. This basically works on an IMAP platform, but is very easy to configure.
On you iPhone in mail settings choose Add Account
Your server settings are as follows:
Server: desserv.com
Username: yourusername@desserv.local
Password: yourpassword
Our mail system will allow you to send and recieve email. Although it is a little more battery intensive, we suggest you set the iPhone to send and receive mail automatically at an interval of 15-30 minutes so your email is automatically downloaded from the server to the iPhone automatically reducing some of the connect time.
There is an application currently under development, but because the iPhone is locked by Apple from being able to have its system applications modified or new applications installed, and the unlocking process is both tricky and it there has even been a case in the news of Apple considering a teenager who took apart the phone, re-wired it slightly, and cracked the locks in place to be able to write applications to the phone; the rest of the world is waiting for a business class email solution to be released on the phone. So far there isn't any word on this and many business users who purchased and iPhone when they came out have ended up selling them off and reverting back to their old device better suited to the business world.
The primary reason for locking the iPhone was firstly to protect Apples applications designed for the iPhone, but also to secure the marketing chanel to the former Cingular Wireless, now known as "The New" AT&T
